The US' Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tops all five rankings of the first-ever QS World University Rankings for technical subjects. Another US institution, Stanford University, and Britain's University of Cambridge, divide second places.
As of 2010, QS had put the world's top universities into one pan-category ranking, with the US' Harvard University topping the rankings five consecutive years before being bested by the University of Cambridge in 2010.
This year, however, QS ranked schools in five different subjects. The other four categories were life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, social sciences and management, and arts and humanities. The results of those categories will be released between April and June.
Rankings on technical subjects are further divided into five sub-categories: computer science and information systems; chemical engineering; civil and structural engineering; electrical engineering; and mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing.
Top-performing universities in Asia in technical subjects included the National University of Singapore, the University of Tokyo, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and IIT Bombay and China's Tsinghua University and Peking University, the QS said in a press statement sent to The Jakarta Post.
The rest of the top-200 lists in the five sub-categories can be seen at www.topuniversities.com.
Unfortunately, no Indonesian universities were included in the lists, although the Bandung Institute of Technology was ranked 93rd in the engineering and IT category in 2010.
